It can be upsetting to find out that you have cataracts. You might even be afraid that you will suddenly go blind. However, that is not how cataracts work. With cataracts, your eyesight will progressively become worse, depending on which stage this condition has been found. In many cases, surgery will not be indicated immediately after being diagnosed with this condition.
While there is no proven way to stop cataracts from forming or to stop them from progressing, here are a few strategies that your eye doctor may recommend to help keep your eyes healthy and possibly help keep cataracts from getting worse.
Protect Your Eyes from the Sun
It has been suggested that the sun’s ultraviolet rays can cause cataracts to develop. If you have cataracts, it is a good idea to wear sunglasses when you are outdoors that block UVB rays to protect your eyes.
Reduce Your Use of Alcohol
The possibility of developing cataracts increases if you drink alcohol to excess. By reducing your alcohol, you may avoid developing additional cataracts or speeding up the progression of existing cataracts.
Stop Smoking
Smoking can increase your risk of developing cataracts and possibly cause existing cataracts to worsen. If you have problems quitting, speak to your doctor about strategies to quit.
Have Regular Eye Exams
It is important to have regular eye exams, but if you have cataracts, it becomes even more important to monitor their progression. Speak with your eye doctor about how often you should have your eyes examined.
Pay Attention to Your Health
Other health problems, including diabetes or taking certain medications can increase the risk of developing cataracts. Speak with your eye doctor about what medications you are taking and what medical conditions you are being treated for.
Eat a Healthy Diet
Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables in your daily diet can help keep your eyes healthy. A recent study has shown that the risk for cataracts can be reduced by eating a healthy diet that is full of antioxidants from fruits and vegetables.
